More than 52,000 law enforcement officers were deployed across Istanbul on Thursday to ensure security during May 1, also known as International Workers’ Day, with the majority of events concluding peacefully, the Istanbul Governor’s Office said.

Istanbul hosts peaceful 1 May events

According to an official statement, International Workers’ Day, also called Labour Day, was celebrated in Istanbul with events organized by labor unions. “

The Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Türkiye (DISK) and its affiliates held a rally in Kadikoy Rihtim Square, attracting approximately 35,000 participants.

Another major demonstration, organized by the Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions (Turk-Is) and its affiliates in Kartal Square, drew about 30,000 attendees.

“No incidents occurred during the permitted events, and participants dispersed without issues,” the statement added.

Security forces prevent unauthorized rallies

To maintain public order, the Governor’s Office said 52,656 police officers were deployed across the city. “Groups attempting to organize illegal demonstrations outside of the designated areas were not allowed to proceed.”

In total, 384 individuals who gathered for unauthorized protests were taken into custody. The legal procedure is underway, authorities confirmed.

“This information is shared with respect for the public,” the statement concluded.
