Dubai plans to introduce flying taxi service by 2026

Dubai is planning to set up a city-wide electric aerial taxi service and vertiport network, according to Emirates News Agency (WAM)

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has signed a contract to introduce an air taxi service in Dubai by 2026.

The ceremony for signing the agreement was attended by the Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ahead of the World Governments Summit (WGS).

With this agreement, Dubai is set to become the world’s pioneer in offering a commercial, city-wide electric airborne taxi service and vertiport network, as per the Emirates News Agency (WAM) report. 

The Joby Aviation S4 Aerial taxi is part of the Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) forthcoming mobility projects, which aim to provide transportation services for Dubai residents and tourists. 

This groundbreaking transportation service utilizes state-of-the-art technology to facilitate individuals’ secure and efficient movement within urban areas.

This development aims to integrate with Dubai’s public transport network seamlessly. 

The Joby Aviation S4 is designed to accommodate four passengers besides the pilot.

It is equipped with six propellers and four battery packs, enabling it to cover a maximum distance of 161 kilometers (100.04 miles). 

The airborne taxi produces less noise than helicopters, with a top speed of up to 321 kilometers per hour (199.4 miles per hour). 

Its vertical take-off and landing capability makes it well-suited for urban settings, negating the extensive horizontal space typically required for traditional stations.
