Türkiye's egg exports to Italy and Poland surged in the first five months of the year as avian influenza-related production losses in Poland tightened supplies across Europe and boosted demand for Turkish products.

According to data compiled from the Aegean Exporters' Associations, Türkiye exported 92,494 tons of eggs between January and May, generating $240.1 million in revenue.

Iraq remained the sector's largest export market with $47.6 million in sales, while the most significant growth came from Europe.

Italy, Poland drive export growth

Egg exports to Italy climbed from $2.2 million in the January-May period of last year to $24.8 million this year, an increase of more than 10-fold.

Shipment volumes rose from 1,200 tons to 13,200 tons, representing an increase of roughly 1,000% in both value and volume.

Poland, one of Europe's leading egg producers, also sharply increased imports from Türkiye after avian influenza outbreaks disrupted domestic production.

Turkish egg exports to Poland jumped from $109,000 in the first five months of last year to $19.7 million this year, while shipment volumes increased from 15 tons to approximately 11,000 tons.

Biosecurity measures boost Türkiye's competitiveness

Neriman Dere Catmadas, head of the Izmir Egg Producers Association, said Türkiye produces around 20 billion eggs annually, ranking among the world's top 10 producers and exporting nearly one-quarter of its output.

She attributed the country's growing competitiveness to improvements in feed quality, production standards and animal health, as well as strict biosecurity measures implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

“Poland is one of Europe's most important egg producers, but avian influenza outbreaks forced the culling of more than 4 million birds, creating serious disruptions in production and exports,” Catmadas said.

She added that Türkiye's effective biosecurity measures and regulatory oversight helped shield the sector from similar disruptions and made Turkish products more attractive to international buyers.

According to Catmadas, countries including Italy, Poland and the United States have increasingly turned to Türkiye to meet demand as European buyers seek reliable suppliers amid ongoing production challenges.

“Our product quality and strict biosecurity measures have made Türkiye a preferred supplier,” she said. “Being chosen by international markets is a source of pride for the sector and contributes valuable foreign currency earnings to the country.”
