Türkiye's state oil company, Turkish Petroleum (TPAO), will become a partner in the Safak-Asiman Natural Gas Field located in Azerbaijan's section of the Caspian Sea, acquiring a 30% stake in the project, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced.

The partnership agreement will be signed during the 30th Caspian Oil and Gas Fair in Baku, with TPAO joining Azerbaijan's State Oil Company (SOCAR) and British Petroleum (BP) as project partners.

Strategic collaboration strengthens regional energy ties

Minister Bayraktar announced during press briefings in Baku, where he is attending the major regional energy exhibition. He confirmed productive discussions with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev regarding expanded energy sector cooperation between the two countries.

"TPAO is joining the Safak-Asiman Natural Gas Field as a partner. We will hopefully sign this agreement here. We acquired a 30% share. Our partners are the Azerbaijan State Oil Company (SOCAR) and British Petroleum (BP). We will hopefully start our production in this field as well," Bayraktar stated.

TPAO expands Caspian Sea presence

The minister emphasized that TPAO's presence and visibility in Azerbaijan are increasing, with discussions underway regarding additional fields.

"TPAO's presence and visibility here are increasing a bit more. We are also discussing other fields. We will continue by particularly increasing our work in the Caspian Sea," Bayraktar said, indicating broader expansion plans for Turkish energy activities in the region.

The partnership represents a significant step in strengthening energy cooperation between Türkiye and Azerbaijan, two nations with longstanding strategic ties in the energy sector.

European energy security contributions

Bayraktar highlighted how Türkiye-Azerbaijan energy projects contribute to Europe's supply security, stating, "In the upcoming period, hopefully there will be new developments in projects related to additional gas going to Europe from different sources."

The collaboration is positioned to enhance energy diversification for European markets, providing alternative supply routes and reducing dependence on traditional energy corridors.

Renewable energy expansion plans

Beyond natural gas cooperation, the minister outlined plans for renewable energy development in Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan region.

"In the upcoming period, we will develop projects related to the production of renewable energy in Nakhchivan, bringing it to Türkiye, and naturally, its transit to Europe through Türkiye," Bayraktar explained.

This renewable energy initiative represents a forward-looking component of the bilateral energy partnership, aligning with global trends toward sustainable energy sources while maintaining strategic energy transit roles.

The announcement reinforces Azerbaijan's position as a key energy supplier and Türkiye's role as a crucial energy transit corridor between the Caspian region and European markets.

The 30% stake acquisition by TPAO demonstrates Türkiye's continued investment in regional energy resources and its commitment to strengthening energy security through diversified partnerships. The collaboration with international partners like BP brings technical expertise and global market access to the project.
