Türkiye has agreed to procure a new Floating Production Platform in ship form to boost output in the Black Sea.

Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said the facility will raise daily natural gas production to 40 million cubic meters once operational. The platform is scheduled to arrive by late 2027 and begin production by mid-2028.

New floating platform to boost Black Sea gas output

The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources has taken the next step in developing the Sakarya Gas Field, moving the project into Phase 3. An agreement has been signed with a Chinese company to procure a new floating production platform (FPU), designed as a ship, to support natural gas output in the Black Sea.

The new platform will be capable of producing 25 million cubic meters of gas per day. In the first phase, production is planned at 20 million cubic meters from 27 deep-sea wells. Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said the vessel is expected to arrive in Türkiye by the end of 2027 and to begin operations by mid-2028.

Türkiye expands offshore capacity with second floating platform

Shaped like a ship, similar to the existing Osman Gazi Floating Production Platform, the structure will measure 273 meters in length, 54 meters in width, and 26 meters in depth. It will be anchored about 180 kilometers offshore at a water depth of 2,200 meters, secured by 20 cables in four groups, and will remain stationary. The platform will also house up to 150 personnel.

On-site, the facility will handle production from the wells and carry out essential processes, including well control, water separation, drying, compression, and measurement. From there, the gas will be transported via an underwater pipeline and fed directly into the national transmission network.

New platform under construction in China to arrive by 2027

Bayraktar highlighted that the platform will significantly boost capacity: “Our Osman Gazi Floating Production Platform will have a sibling. With this new facility, currently under construction in China, our daily natural gas production in the Black Sea will rise to 40 million cubic meters—four times today’s level—once it becomes operational in 2028.”
