Türkiye is expected to restore access to Discord after the platform met the country’s security and content removal criteria, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said.
Speaking during a live broadcast, Uraloglu said Discord, which has been blocked in Türkiye since October 2024, had reached the level requested by Turkish authorities, especially on content removal.
“Discord currently meets our criteria,” Uraloglu said. “Especially in terms of content removal, they have now reached the criteria Türkiye wants.”
Uraloglu said Discord had accepted Türkiye’s red lines on security and content-related issues.
He said relevant ministries and institutions were working in coordination on the process.
“We are discussing opening it after a while. We will probably open it after a while,” Uraloglu said.
The minister made the remarks on a TGRT Haber program hosted by Gurkan Hacir and Fatih Atik.
His comments marked a new development in the access ban imposed on the communication platform.
Discord was blocked in Türkiye after public reactions and legal debates intensified in 2024 over allegations involving some servers on the platform.
The allegations included child abuse, the sharing of obscene content and the use of some groups for various criminal activities.
Following these developments, security units and prosecutors launched a broad investigation into suspicious servers and groups.
After reviewing findings from the investigations, Ankara 1st Criminal Judgeship of Peace ruled on Oct. 9, 2024, to block access to the platform.
The decision was quickly implemented by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority, known as BTK, and access to Discord from Türkiye was fully blocked.
