Iran announced it had downed Israeli unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that violated its airspace near the city of Salmas in the country's northwest region.
The Salmas area is located approximately 32 kilometers (19.88 miles) from the Turkish border. Israeli authorities have not yet issued a statement regarding the incident.
The drones were among the primary components of Israel's attack launched against Iran early Friday morning. Israeli security sources had indicated that prior to the operation, they established a base on Iranian territory for launching explosive-carrying drones, which later targeted missile launchers near Tehran.
The downing of the aircraft near Iran's northwestern border highlights the proximity of the conflict to Türkiye, a NATO member that shares a border with Iran. The incident occurred in a region that has strategic significance due to its location at the intersection of Iranian, Turkish and regional security interests.
Iran's announcement comes as tensions continue to escalate between the two nations following the latest exchange of military operations. The use of UAVs has become a central feature of the ongoing confrontation between Israel and Iran.
