Historic military music meets modern football stage

The match drew intense interest, with fans traveling from across Türkiye and abroad to support the national team, filling the stadium and surrounding areas with a festive atmosphere that carried into kickoff.

Before the match, the Mehter team took to the pitch and performed throughout the pre-match build-up, energizing the crowd with what is widely considered one of the world’s oldest military music traditions. The performance continued intermittently during the game, adding a ceremonial dimension to the sporting event.

That energy translated onto the pitch, where Türkiye edged Romania 1-0 to advance.

What 'Mehter' means and why it matters

The Mehter, also known as Mehteran in plural form, refers to a traditional Ottoman military band composed mainly of wind and percussion instruments. Designed for open-air performance, it features instruments such as the zurna, a double-reed wind instrument, alongside large drums, cymbals, and kettledrums.

Historically, Mehter music was used to set marching rhythms for soldiers, raise morale, and intimidate opposing forces, while also serving ceremonial roles during times of peace. Its origins trace back to the Seljuk period and later became formalized under the Ottomans during the reign of Sultan Murad I, when it was closely tied to elite military units.

From battlefield sound to cultural symbol

Over time, Mehter evolved beyond its battlefield role and became a symbol of cultural identity. Although the tradition was abolished in the early 19th century during military reforms, it was revived in the 20th century and is now institutionalized within Türkiye’s armed forces.

Today, Mehter performances are commonly staged at national celebrations, official ceremonies, and international events, where they showcase the country’s historical heritage through powerful rhythms and distinctive sounds.
