Istanbul University and the Sudanese Students Community organized a “Sudan National Day” program on Sunday, Dec. 28, highlighting Sudan’s cultural heritage and providing space to discuss the country’s ongoing war and humanitarian crisis.
Held at Istanbul University’s Professor Dr. Cemil Bilsel Conference Hall, the event drew Sudan’s Consul General in Istanbul, Osama Mahjoub Hassan Dirar, along with university officials and Sudanese students.
Among those attending were members of the Sudanese Students’ Community and the university’s International Students Center director, Osman Akgul.
Speakers focused on the current situation in Sudan, addressing the war and its humanitarian consequences while delivering messages of peace and solidarity.
The program also showcased Sudanese heritage through student-led activities and cultural displays.
The event featured a theater performance by Sudanese students studying in Istanbul, an exhibition of Sudan-specific traditional products, and a tasting of Sudanese cuisine offered to participants.
Sudan has been gripped by a conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, a war that has killed thousands of people and displaced millions.
Of Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF controls all five states of the Darfur region in the west, except for some northern parts of North Darfur that remain under army control.
The army, meanwhile, holds most areas of the remaining 13 states in the south, north, east, and center, including the capital, Khartoum.
