Swedish journalist Joakim Medin has been released from Turkish detention and is en route to Sweden, according to officials and diplomatic sources.
The announcement came Friday after what Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described as "hard work in relative silence" by Swedish diplomats to secure Medin's freedom.
"The Swedish journalist Joakim Medin is on his way home to Sweden from Türkiye. He will land in a few hours," Kristersson wrote in Swedish on social media.
In his statement, Kristersson thanked staff at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who "worked intensively on this issue under the leadership of Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard," as well as European colleagues who provided assistance during the process.
"Above all, welcome home Joakim!" Kristersson concluded in his statement.
