Sea turtle conservation efforts are ramping up at Kumkoy Beach in Antalya's Aksu district, a key nesting ground for the endangered loggerhead.
According to a statement from the Aksu Municipality, municipal police teams are conducting coordinated inspections along the coast throughout the nesting season to ensure wildlife safety.
Residents have been asked to help protect loggerhead nesting areas—keeping vehicles and fishing off the beach, and avoiding any activity that could disturb the turtles' habitat.
Aksu Mayor Isa Yildirim, whose remarks were included in the statement, said the work carried out on the beach goes beyond mere inspection activity and forms part of a broader, holistic approach to protecting wildlife.
Noting that Kumkoy is an important part of the loggerhead turtles' life cycle, Yildirim continued: "For this reason, when using our beach, we also have to take nature's needs into account.''
''Our teams are carrying out the necessary inspections in the field, but the public's sensitivity is just as important as those inspections when it comes to protecting wildlife. Protecting Kumkoy is a shared responsibility for all of us," he added.
Yildirim said that the removal of beach shelters has given the beach a more orderly and natural appearance, and said work is underway on a public beach project planned for Kumkoy ahead of next season.
Explaining that the project is being designed with the beach's natural structure and the turtles' nesting areas in mind, Yildirim said, "We want to turn Kumkoy Beach into an area that our residents can use comfortably, while also allowing loggerhead turtles to nest safely. We will prioritize the natural environment and ecological sensitivity in every project we carry out."
