A major heatwave that has caused extreme temperatures and health emergencies across several European countries is forecast to reach Türkiye in the coming days, with meteorological authorities warning of a significant rise in air temperatures nationwide.
The weather system, associated with a persistent “omega block” atmospheric pattern, has led to prolonged periods of intense heat across Europe, where temperatures have exceeded 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in multiple regions.
The phenomenon has been linked to increased heat-related health incidents, infrastructure strain, and heightened wildfire risk.
According to meteorological forecasts, temperatures in Türkiye are expected to increase by 5 to 6 degrees above seasonal norms beginning next week.
The most significant impacts are anticipated in the western, central, and southeastern regions.
Projections indicate that:
Authorities note that the southeast will likely experience the most severe conditions, consistent with typical regional summer heat patterns intensified by the incoming system.
Meteorological and health officials have issued warnings urging the public to take precautions against extreme heat. Vulnerable groups, including the elderly, young children, and individuals with chronic medical conditions, are considered at higher risk.
Recommended measures include avoiding outdoor exposure during peak heat hours between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., maintaining adequate hydration, and minimizing direct sunlight exposure.
