A Filipino mountaineer has died from exhaustion while attempting to summit Mount Everest, marking yet another fatality during the 2025 climbing season.
According to The Kathmandu Post, 45-year-old Philipp II Santiago reached Camp IV—situated at 7,900 meters above sea level—around 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Shortly after arrival, Santiago succumbed to extreme fatigue. His body was discovered at the same site.
Nepal's Department of Tourism confirmed that Santiago’s remains have been left at Camp IV due to the life-threatening conditions and the logistical difficulties involved in body retrieval at such high altitudes.
“Santiago arrived at Camp IV visibly exhausted and was unable to recover. Despite efforts to monitor his condition, he passed away within hours,” the statement read.
In light of rising fatalities on the world’s highest peak, Nepalese authorities are now considering new regulations to enhance climber safety.
On April 18, the government submitted the Integrated Tourism Bill to the upper house of the federal parliament. The proposed law would require all Everest hopefuls to have previously climbed a mountain over 7,000 meters before being granted a permit.
Other proposed measures include increased permit fees and stricter verification of climbing experience.
