The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has issued a detention order for 36 suspects, including Cankaya Mayor Huseyin Can Guner, as part of a corruption investigation.
According to a statement from the prosecutor's office, the Ankara Provincial Security Directorate's Financial Crimes Unit carried out searches and seizures at the addresses of suspects facing detention orders on charges of "establishing a criminal organization," "membership in a criminal organization," "accepting bribes," "giving bribes" and "bid rigging."
"As part of work carried out by the Ankara Provincial Security Directorate's Financial Crimes Unit, under the coordination of our Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, a decision was made to detain a total of 36 suspects, including Cankaya Mayor Huseyin Can Guner, on charges of establishing a criminal organization, membership in a criminal organization, accepting bribes, giving bribes and bid rigging, and to conduct searches and seizures at their addresses. As part of this, 27 of the suspects have been detained," the prosecutor's office said in a statement.
Of the 36 suspects named in the detention order, 27 were detained in simultaneous operations carried out in the early morning, according to the prosecutor's office. Those detained were taken to the Ankara Provincial Security Directorate.
Efforts to locate the remaining suspects are continuing, with the Financial Crimes Unit describing the ongoing work as being carried out "comprehensively and meticulously."
Police teams also conducted a search at the Cankaya Municipality building in the early morning hours.
Guner addressed the operation in a statement posted to his social media account.
"We became aware of the operation due to the search conducted this morning at our municipal building and at the homes of our bureaucrats," he said.
"As previously planned, I will be in Ankara within a few hours. I have notified all relevant authorities of this. I also provided a spare key to the teams that came to search my home, and I asked all of our colleagues to assist our security forces," the mayor added.
Guner said he wanted "all of our neighbors" to know that the municipality had been managed to the best of its ability since he took office, and that there had been no conduct that would embarrass anyone who trusted the administration.
"Once the details and reasons for the investigation become clear, we will share the necessary explanations on the matter with the public," he concluded.
