A general cargo ship that suffered engine failure in the Bosphorus Strait was safely anchored in Buyukdere with the help of a pilot and tugboats, Türkiye’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure said Tuesday.

The 98-meter-long vessel, named Arda, experienced engine failure off Umuryeri in the Istanbul Strait while sailing from Russia, the ministry said in a statement.

“The ship was safely anchored in Buyukdere under the coordination of our Directorate General of Coastal Safety’s Istanbul Vessel Traffic Services Center, with the assistance of our pilot captain and our tugboats Kurtarma-4 and Kurtarma-6,” the statement said.

Traffic reopened safely

The incident temporarily disrupted traffic in the Bosphorus.

Authorities said vessel traffic in both directions was reopened shortly after the ship was secured.

“Following the safe anchoring in Buyukdere of the 98-meter-long ship Arda, which experienced engine failure off Umuryeri while en route from Bandirma to Russia, vessel traffic in the Istanbul Strait has been reopened in both northbound and southbound directions,” the ministry said.
