A 147-meter Turkish-flagged container ship named KAPPA was refloated after running aground off Yenikoy in Istanbul’s Sariyer district, just meters before it could hit waterfront mansions along the Bosphorus.
The incident took place around midnight near Yenikoy after the vessel reportedly drifted for reasons that have not yet been determined. Earlier reports said the ship had experienced a rudder failure while entering the Istanbul Bosphorus.
The ship, which was sailing toward Izmit, came to a stop only a few meters from the shoreline and nearby waterside residences, known locally as yalis. A yali is a historic waterfront mansion built along the Bosphorus, one of Istanbul’s most valuable coastal areas.
Following the incident, maritime traffic through the Bosphorus was temporarily suspended in both directions for safety reasons.
Teams from Türkiye’s Directorate General of Coastal Safety were sent to the scene, while divers carried out damage checks and inspections for about six hours.
After the assessment, the grounded vessel was pulled free with the help of the Kurtarma-5, Kurtarma-6 and Kurtarma-8 tugboats. Officials said the ship would be taken out of the Bosphorus and anchored safely.
Aerial footage showed the vessel close to the shoreline as rescue crews worked around the area. The Bosphorus line had not yet been reopened while the towing operation was underway.
