Comedian Deniz Goktas was detained at passport control after returning to Türkiye from a trip abroad, following a public controversy over his stand-up show "Olu Deniz," known as "Death Deniz" in English.
Goktas had become a focus of national debate after excerpts from the show circulated widely online and drew criticism from ruling political circles.
His detention came after an investigation was launched into the performance on the grounds of allegedly "insulting religious values," a legal accusation linked in the source text to the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.
The controversy centered on "Olu Deniz," a stand-up performance staged in Harbiye that quickly spread across social media.
According to the report, the show reached 6 million views in four days and became a target of criticism from pro-government circles, where calls were made for Goktas to be arrested.
The investigation was reportedly opened over claims that the performance insulted religious values, a phrase used in Türkiye for alleged offenses involving public remarks or content seen as degrading religious beliefs.
Clips from Goktas' "Olu Deniz" performance shared on X were later made inaccessible from Türkiye.
X then made the relevant posts invisible to users in Türkiye.
Before his return, Goktas had responded to social media claims that he had "fled abroad" after traveling outside Türkiye.
He said the claims were not true and explained that he had gone abroad for a holiday. After returning to Istanbul, he was detained during passport checks at the airport.
Deniz Goktas was born on April 18, 1994, in Mamak, a district of Ankara. He began his higher education in civil engineering at Middle East Technical University (METU) before graduating from the same university's psychology department.
After moving to Istanbul to study cinema, Goktas started performing stand-up in 2019 through an open mic event organized by TuzBiber Comedy Club. He later prepared and hosted podcast series including "Deniz Goktas'a Ayiracak Vaktim Yok" (I Don't Have Time to Spare for Deniz Goktas) on Spotify and "Haset" (Envy) on Deezer.
Between 2020 and 2023, he wrote humor pieces for Uykusuz magazine. He gained wider recognition with his one-man stand-up show "Selam Selam," recorded at Ankara Ses Theater in 2023 and later viewed more than 6.5 million times on YouTube.
Goktas also appeared as a guest actor in one episode of the series "Gibi" (Like) and acted in the short film "Ben Tek Siz Hepiniz" in 2022.
