DESAN Shipyard has signed a second Multi-Purpose Mission Ship (MPMS 2) agreement with Malaysia, valued at 339.85 million Malaysian ringgit ($83.64 million), during Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to Türkiye.

The Letter of Acceptance for the procurement of one MPMS 2 was exchanged between Malaysian Foreign Ministry Secretary-General Dato' Sri Amran Bin Muhammed Zin and DESAN Shipyard Chairman of the Board Cenk Ismail Kaptanoglu at a ceremony held at the Presidential Complex.

Production of the first Multi-Purpose Mission Ship (MPMS 1) built for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) is rapidly continuing at DESAN shipyards, with the first vessel scheduled for delivery by the end of 2027.

Same specifications, additional capabilities

MPMS2 will be produced as a sister ship with the same technical specifications as the first ship built for MMEA, with additional capabilities to be added.

The 99-meter-long ship will be built in Türkiye within 24 months by Turkish engineers and workers.

The vessel will feature four fast response boats, two vertical takeoff and landing unmanned aerial vehicles, a helipad with 11-ton capacity, an infirmary and a detention area for 45 persons.

The ship will have a capacity of 70 crew and 30 passengers and will be able to sail continuously for 30 days.

The project will be certified by Turkish Lloyd. Weapon, electronic and communication systems will be integrated with the contributions of leading Turkish defense industry companies, particularly Aselsan and Havelsan, as in the first ship.

In addition to all these elements, an unmanned/autonomous surface vehicle (USV) to be built by DESAN will also be included in the project scope for the second ship. Thus, the company will also have achieved unmanned surface vehicle (USV) export.

'Technical competence in first ship paved way for second order'

DESAN Shipyard Chairman Kaptanoglu said Türkiye's competitive and innovative power in the shipbuilding and defense industry fields is being met with concrete projects that inspire confidence at the international level.

Kaptanoglu said the success and technical competence demonstrated in the first MPMS ship built for MMEA was the most important reference that paved the way for the second ship order.

"We see this new ship as a continuation of long-term cooperation that creates mutual value between the two countries, and we are very pleased to contribute to Malaysia's maritime security," Kaptanoglu said.

"We are also very happy and proud to announce that we will share good news about permanent investments with a long-term vision in Malaysia, which we see as a departure point and hub for Southeast Asia, very soon," he added.
