President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a closed-door meeting with Bakir Izetbegovic, a former member of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidential Council, in Istanbul on Saturday, according to a statement from the Turkish Presidency.
The meeting took place at the Dolmabahce Working Office, though no details about the substance of the discussions were disclosed by the presidency.
Izetbegovic served as the sixth Bosniak member of the Presidential Council from 2010 to 2018. Under Bosnia and Herzegovina's constitution, the country's presidency functions as a three-member council comprising one Bosniak, one Serb, and one Croat representative, with the chairmanship rotating every eight months.
Türkiye has historically maintained close diplomatic and cultural ties with Bosnia and Herzegovina, rooted in shared Ottoman-era history and Türkiye's active role during and after the 1992–1995 Bosnian War. Ankara has consistently positioned itself as a key partner to Sarajevo, supporting Bosnia's territorial integrity and its aspirations for Euro-Atlantic integration.
