Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to host a trilateral summit Friday in Istanbul with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, according to a report by Italy-based news agency Agenzia Nova citing Libyan diplomatic sources.

The leaders will reportedly discuss a wide range of strategic issues, including regional developments, economic cooperation, migration flows, and the exploitation of energy resources in the Mediterranean.

UN Special Representative for Libya to visit Rome

Meanwhile, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya, Hannah Tetteh, is set to make an official visit to Rome on Friday, the report said. It will be Tetteh’s first trip to the Italian capital since assuming leadership of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) in January. The visit, originally planned for May, was postponed due to logistical reasons, according to Agenzia Nova.

Tetteh’s visit comes at a pivotal moment in Libya’s political process and precedes the expected presentation of a new UNSMIL road map for the country to the United Nations Security Council in August.

Libya remains fractured between two rival administrations: the internationally recognized government led by Dbeibeh in Tripoli, which controls the west, and a parallel government appointed by the House of Representatives in early 2022, led by Osama Hammad and based in Benghazi, which governs the east and much of the south.

The United Nations continues to mediate efforts to unify governance and facilitate national elections in the war-torn country.
