In a high-level reshuffle, Türkiye’s Communications Directorate saw a leadership change as Fahrettin Altun was replaced by former Deputy Foreign Minister Burhanettin Duran, according to a presidential decree published in the Official Gazette.
Altun has also been appointed to lead the Human Rights and Equality Institution of Türkiye as part of the latest changes.
The Human Rights and Equality Institution of Türkiye was established in 2016 to prevent discrimination and to operate in line with these principles, as well as to effectively combat torture and ill-treatment.
Türkiye’s Directorate of Communications was established in 2018 to oversee all state-related communication, media, broadcasting, and information exchange activities, with Altun serving as its head since its inception.
During his tenure, the directorate expanded its influence in both domestic and international media spheres, coordinated public information campaigns, and implemented policies to counter disinformation. The institution also took on a more visible role in managing Türkiye’s digital communication presence, including through official state platforms and international media outreach.
Altun's successor, Burhanettin Duran, is a prominent academic and former deputy foreign minister. Before his brief tenure at the Foreign Ministry, he served as general coordinator of the SETA Foundation.
In October 2018, he was appointed to the Presidential Security and Foreign Policy Board, and most recently, on May 16, 2024, he was named deputy foreign minister.
