President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has appointed Fahrettin Altun, former head of Türkiye’s Communications Directorate, as Türkiye’s ambassador to the Vatican, according to a presidential decree.
The decision, published in Saturday’s Official Gazette, also includes several ambassadorial changes across key foreign missions.
Fahrettin Altun led the Communications Directorate of the Presidency of Türkiye from 2018 until July 2025, when former Deputy Foreign Minister Burhanettin Duran took over the position.
He also serves as president of the Human Rights and Equality Institution of Türkiye (TIHEK), a public body responsible for monitoring and promoting human rights and equality standards in the country.
Altun will fill the vacancy left by Ufuk Ulutas, who was appointed ambassador to Tashkent in early February.
The same presidential decree introduced several other diplomatic appointments.
Mustafa Kibaroglu was named Türkiye’s permanent representative to the United Nations Office in Vienna, while Mustafa Turker Ari was appointed ambassador to Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. Baris Ceyhun Erciyes, who serves as deputy director general for the Balkans and Central Europe at the Foreign Ministry, was assigned as ambassador to Tirana, Albania.
All appointments entered into force after being published in the Official Gazette.
