German authorities have launched an investigation into two Turkish nationals on suspicion of espionage, including a staff member at the Turkish Consulate General in Cologne.
According to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, police searched the woman’s home in Cologne on Wednesday. She is suspected of spying on behalf of Türkiye, specifically related to the alleged transfer of information about PKK terrorist organization members residing in Germany.
The woman, who works at the Turkish consulate, has not been detained. Officials confirmed the search but declined to provide further details due to the ongoing nature of the case.
A second suspect, reported by German media to be a Turkish-German police officer based in Cologne, is also under investigation.
He allegedly accessed internal police databases and passed information to the consulate employee.
German news outlets, including Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger and Presseportal, described the police operation as a “spy raid” and reported that the probe is being conducted under strict confidentiality.
The case comes amid ongoing tensions between Berlin and Ankara over surveillance allegations and activities targeting dissident groups, including the PKK, which is considered a terrorist organization by the EU, U.S., and Türkiye.
