A 17-year-old former student opened random fire with a shotgun at a vocational high school in Sanliurfa’s Siverek district, wounding 16 people, most of them students, before dying by suicide with his own weapon, Governor Hasan Sildak said.
The attack took place at Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in the Hasan Celebi neighborhood, where the suspect entered the school grounds and fired randomly, according to the updated information.
Sildak said the attacker was a former student of the school born in 2007 and that he died by suicide using his own gun.
The shooting wounded 16 people, most of them students, according to the updated report.
After opening fire outside, the attacker entered the school building and took students hostage, the report said.
Health teams, police and special operations units were dispatched to the scene after emergency calls.
Sanliurfa Governor Hasan Sildak said the attacker was an old student of the school.
He said the suspect was born in 2007 and later died by suicide with his own weapon.
The report also said the attacker had previously argued with a friend and came to the school with a pump-action shotgun, according to NTV Sanliurfa correspondent Kadir Celikcan.
A witness speaking about the incident said the attacker appeared to be 17 or 18 years old.
The witness said the suspect entered the high school yard with a long-barreled weapon and fired randomly.
“He first opened fire in the yard and then directly at the school,” the witness said.
Türkiye’s Interior Ministry released a statement and said the attack at Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Sanliurfa’s Siverek district was carried out in the morning by O.K., born in 2007 and identified as a former student of the school.
The ministry said that, according to initial findings, 10 students, 4 teachers, 1 police officer and 1 canteen operator were wounded in the attack and were taken to Siverek State Hospital for treatment.
It said the assailant carried out the attack with a pump-action shotgun and later died by suicide with the same weapon.
The ministry also said a wide-ranging investigation had been launched by security units and that further developments would be shared with the public.
