Istanbul Airport solidified its position as Europe's busiest aviation hub during the peak summer travel period, handling an average of 1,635 daily flights from Aug. 18-24, according to data from the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol).
The Turkish gateway's summer performance proves an increase compared to its 2024 annual average of 1,401 daily flights, demonstrating the airport's capacity to handle seasonal surges in travel demand. This marks the third consecutive year Istanbul Airport has claimed the top spot in European flight traffic.
Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport ranked second during the August period with 1,450 daily flights, followed by Paris Charles de Gaulle with 1,432 flights. Germany's Frankfurt Airport recorded 1,384 daily movements, while London Heathrow rounded out the top five with 1,346 flights.
Türkiye's tourism infrastructure showed broader strength across the rankings. Antalya Airport, serving the Turkish Riviera, captured eighth place in Europe with 1,055 daily flights, highlighting the country's appeal as a Mediterranean destination during peak season.
Türkiye's overall aviation sector ranks sixth among European countries for air traffic volume, averaging 3,140 daily flights nationwide. Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu previously noted that Turkish airspace maintains exceptional efficiency, with delays averaging less than 0.5 minutes per flight according to Eurocontrol statistics.
