Police in Istanbul detained two suspects after seizing large amounts of counterfeit foreign currency and fake gold during an operation in the city’s Fatih district, authorities said.
The operation was carried out by teams from the Istanbul Police Department’s Financial Crimes Unit as part of efforts to prevent possible fraud cases before Eid al-Adha, a major religious holiday in Türkiye, when shopping and cash transactions often increase.
According to the information provided, police identified an address in Fatih and launched an operation targeting suspected counterfeit money and fake gold production.
During the raid, officers detained two suspects, who were later taken to the police station for further procedures.
Searches at the address uncovered $660,800 and €71,180 in counterfeit banknotes, along with 21 kilograms of fake gold.
Police also seized materials and equipment allegedly used in the production and packaging process, including 6,000 euro watermarks, 16 kilograms of sheet metal used in fake gold production, 5,000 gold packages, a gold cutting and pressing machine, and a mold for gram gold.
The seized items suggested that the suspects were not only holding fake currency and gold but also had equipment that could be used to prepare counterfeit products for circulation.
The two suspects were taken to the police station after the operation.
No further details were provided about the suspects or whether they had used the counterfeit money or fake gold before the raid.
