A Jewish American man from New York was fatally stabbed Sunday, May 4, while photographing wildlife in Türkiye’s southern Antalya province, according to Turkish and Israeli media.
Yitzchak Eliyashiv, 45, a U.S. citizen and well-known wildlife photographer, had traveled to the remote Gundogmus district of Antalya shortly after Passover to capture images of animals in their natural habitat, Israeli outlet Yedioth Ahronoth reported.
Eliyashiv had been staying at the home of a local resident, Ismail Kara. A dispute reportedly broke out between the two men on Sunday, allegedly after Kara consumed alcohol, Turkish daily Cumhuriyet reported. The reason for the argument remains unclear.
The confrontation escalated into violence, during which Eliyashiv was stabbed and critically injured. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died from his wounds. Kara, who was also injured in the incident and was reportedly intoxicated, was arrested and charged with intentional homicide.
Authorities in Türkiye stated that the killing is not believed to have been motivated by antisemitism.
Eliyashiv’s body was taken to a forensic medical facility in Antalya. The American organization Misaskim, which provides support for Jewish burial arrangements, is assisting in repatriating his remains to New York for burial, Yedioth Ahronoth reported.
