A technical issue linked to increased underground water flow has disrupted operations on one of Istanbul’s key metro lines, prompting temporary service adjustments and alternative transport measures for commuters.

Tunnel issue triggers safety checks, partial disruption

Authorities said a section of the M7 Yildiz–Mahmutbey metro line between Mecidiyekoy and Caglayan stations was affected after a rise in groundwater flow near a rail switch area required urgent maintenance. A rail switch, known as a “makas,” is a mechanism that allows trains to move from one track to another, making it a critical point in metro operations.

Metro Istanbul indicated that the issue necessitated repairs to part of the track, while technical inspections and detailed assessments were launched to ensure the line can be safely returned to full operation. Officials added that once evaluations are completed, a permanent repair phase will follow.

Temporary travel plan rolled out to ease commuter impact

As crews work to resolve the issue, authorities have implemented a temporary transport plan to maintain passenger movement across the affected section.

Services between Caglayan and Mahmutbey are continuing with a transfer at Nurtepe station, allowing passengers to complete their journeys despite the disruption. Meanwhile, free bus services operated by IETT—the city’s public bus authority—have been introduced between Nurtepe and Mecidiyekoy to bridge the gap in metro operations.

On other parts of the line, trains between Yildiz and Mecidiyekoy are running as usual, helping to limit the overall impact on the network. Night metro services have also been adjusted and will operate only between Caglayan and Mahmutbey stations until the work is completed.

Officials said developments will be shared through Metro Istanbul’s official communication channels, including its website and social media accounts, as the inspection and repair process moves forward.
