The 2024 Regional Purchasing Power Parities (RPPP) study by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) revealed differences in the purchasing power of the Turkish lira across regions.
In the study, a region with a price level index above 100 is considered ‘expensive’ compared to the national average, while a region with an index below 100 is considered ‘affordable.
Istanbul tops the list with a price level index of 112.6, making it the most expensive region in Türkiye. Prices here are 12.6% higher than the national average, particularly in housing, health and education expenses.
Mardin, Batman, Sirnak, and Siirt have a price level index of 91.5, meaning they are 8.5% cheaper than the national average. Food, healthcare and transportation costs are the lowest here, making it one of Türkiye’s most affordable regions.
Balikesir and Canakkale rank as the most expensive region in Türkiye for both food and non-alcoholic beverages, with a price index of 106.0, and also for clothing and footwear, which have the highest index at 108.4—both well above the national average.
Izmir leads with a 113.8 index for restaurant and hotel expenses, while Agri, Kars, Igdir, and Ardahan are the most affordable at 88.5.
This shows significant regional differences in dining and accommodation costs.
Kocaeli, Sakarya, Duzce, Bolu and Yalova have the highest prices for recreation and cultural activities at 105.0. In the same spending category, Hatay, Kahramanmaras, and Osmaniye have the lowest price level at 93.4.
