Turkish police have deployed 22 mounted patrol horses of various breeds to Ankara to help maintain public order ahead of the upcoming NATO summit.
Mounted police officers, who have begun operations in Kizilay in the city center, are equipped with body-worn cameras. They are responsible for maintaining security and managing traffic flow in crowded areas.
The mounted units have proved popular with children and have been welcomed by the public, sparking calls for the patrols to become a permanent fixture.
The horses, which are especially trained for crowded areas, will be deployed until July 8, the final day of the NATO summit.
Moreover, traffic patrols stationed at various points across the capital continued to search vehicles and individuals deemed suspicious. It was reported that 56,000 police and gendarmerie officers had been deployed for the NATO summit.
During this operation, they were also supported by the police's special operations units. The checks would continue up to and throughout the NATO summit.
