Pegasus Airlines announced the cancellation of 46 flights scheduled for Jan. 12 due to adverse weather conditions expected to affect Istanbul, adding to widespread aviation disruptions across the city's airports.

The cancellations follow a directive from the Meteorological Emergency Committee (MADKOM), which ordered flight restrictions as severe weather is forecast to begin Sunday evening, January 11, and continue impacting operations throughout Monday, Jan. 12.

"Due to adverse weather conditions expected to start in Istanbul on Sunday evening, January 11, and show its effect on Monday, January 12, some of our flights have been canceled by decision of the Meteorological Emergency Committee," the company stated on its website.

Multiple airlines ground flights amid emergency weather protocol

Turkish Airlines previously announced the cancellation of 54 flights at Istanbul Airport for January 12, while Sabiha Gokcen International Airport's Ground Authority HEAS said it will reduce overall flight capacity by 10 percent throughout the day based on assessments from the General Directorate of Meteorology.

The coordinated response across Istanbul's aviation sector reflects the severity of the anticipated weather system. MADKOM, which convenes to evaluate meteorological risks to air travel, has imposed operational restrictions affecting both of the city's major airports.

Pegasus Airlines, Türkiye's second-largest carrier, operates primarily from Sabiha Gokcen Airport on Istanbul's Asian side. The low-cost airline has become a significant player in Turkish aviation since its establishment, serving numerous domestic and international destinations.

Passengers urged to check flight status

The airline directed affected passengers to check flight information through its website and mobile application. The company provided details of all 46 canceled flights in its announcement, though specific route information was not disclosed in the statement.

The cancellations come as Istanbul braces for what meteorological authorities describe as conditions unsafe for normal aviation operations. The weather system is expected to begin affecting the region Sunday evening, with the most significant impact anticipated during Monday's flight schedule.

Passengers with bookings on January 11-12 flights are advised to monitor their flight status directly with their airlines and prepare for possible delays or additional cancellations as weather conditions develop.
