Two sisters visiting Istanbul from the Netherlands were hospitalized with suspected food poisoning on Tuesday, the second such incident in Istanbul's Fatih district within days of a separate case that resulted in four deaths.
Sadegul Onur, 29, and her younger sister Emine were taken to Capa Medical Hospital on November 19 after experiencing nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea at their hotel in the Mesihpasa neighborhood. The incident occurred around 1 p.m., according to police reports.
The siblings arrived in Istanbul on November 17 for a holiday visit and stayed at a hotel in Fatih. Over the following two days, they dined at numerous restaurants spanning from Sirkeci to Kadikoy, consuming a variety of foods including kavurma, cag kebab, chicken burgers, tripe soup, mussels, desserts, and milkshakes, according to statements they gave to security officials.
The pair returned to their hotel on the evening of November 18 before falling ill the next day.
Sadegul Onur was discharged after treatment, while Emine continues to receive care in the children's emergency department. Hospital officials indicated she is not in life-threatening condition.
Police conducted an inspection at the hotel following notification from the hospital. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, though the specific source of the suspected poisoning has not been determined.
The case comes as Türkiye grapples with another poisoning incident in Fatih, where a family of four surnamed Bocek died after staying at a hotel in the district. That incident has prompted heightened scrutiny of food safety and accommodation standards in the area.
