A 19-year-old person who stabbed five people back in 2024, during a livestream on his cellphone at a tea garden in Eskisehir, has been sentenced to a total of 75 years and 5 months in prison, a Turkish court ruled Wednesday.
The Eskisehir 6th High Criminal Court convicted Arda K. on multiple counts of attempted premeditated murder and creating public fear and panic through threats.
The court handed down four separate 15-year sentences for "attempted premeditated murder," plus an additional 11 years and 8 months for the same charge, totaling 71 years and 8 months.
Arda K. received an additional 3 years and 9 months for "creating fear and panic among the public through threats."
The attack occurred on August 23 in the evening at a tea garden in Sehit Rustem Demirbas Park in the Uluonder neighborhood of Eskisehir's Tepebasi district.
Arda K., who was 18 at the time of the attack, injured five victims: Metin Korkmaz, Tevfik Arslan, Cumali Ozemek, Cemal Altintas and Nasit Ozyurek.
The attacker wore a helmet, face mask and assault vest, and carried an ax on his belt during the assault. Police arrested him at the scene and he was subsequently detained pending trial.
The indictment had requested up to 20 years imprisonment for each victim on charges of "attempted premeditated murder" and up to 8 years for "creating fear and panic among the public through threats."
The trial proceedings were conducted in a closed session, as per court order, with only the defendant, who remained in custody throughout the trial, and attorneys for both sides present for the verdict announcement.
