Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warned that Sudan faces a serious risk of fragmentation unless the ongoing conflict is contained, stressing Türkiye’s support for regional and international peace efforts to prevent the country’s division.

Speaking to Qatar-based Al Jazeera Arabic, Fidan said Ankara remains deeply concerned about Sudan’s future and is backing diplomatic initiatives led by regional and international actors, while continuing to deliver humanitarian assistance.

“Sudan’s division is a major concern for us, and this must be prevented,” Fidan said, adding that Türkiye stands ready to intensify diplomatic engagement if requested.

Türkiye backs regional-led peace initiatives

Fidan noted that Türkiye had strong relations with Sudan prior to the outbreak of war and that, since the conflict began, Ankara’s primary role has been humanitarian support and backing peace efforts.

He said Türkiye supports initiatives led by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and the United States aimed at ending the conflict.

“We are supporting all ongoing diplomatic efforts. Türkiye is ready to play a more active role whenever needed,” he said.

Fidan added that Türkiye is in contact with all relevant parties, including U.S. and Arab officials, and continues to provide diplomatic encouragement to prevent further destabilization.

Humanitarian concerns remain severe

Highlighting the scale of the humanitarian crisis, Fidan said Türkiye has been working to deliver aid but faces logistical challenges due to Sudan’s vast geography.

“As Türkiye, what we can do is continue delivering humanitarian assistance. But Sudan is geographically very large, and reaching remote areas is extremely difficult,” he said.

Fidan described the situation as deeply distressing, emphasizing that the Islamic world should not accept continued images of civilian suffering.

“This is not a civilization that kills civilians, children, or destroys hospitals,” he said.

Regional ownership seen as key to stability

Fidan underlined that regional problems should be addressed through regional ownership rather than reliance on external powers.

He said this approach aligns with Türkiye’s foreign policy and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s vision, calling on regional states to cooperate transparently and responsibly.

“Countries in the region have the human, economic and institutional capacity to resolve their own problems,” Fidan said.

He also expressed confidence that closer cooperation among regional actors could help prevent Sudan from descending further into chaos.
