Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will travel to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to participate in the seventh trilateral meeting of the Türkiye-ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partnership on July 10-11, Turkish diplomatic sources announced.
The meeting takes place as part of the 58th ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting.
Fidan will join Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, representing ASEAN's current chair, and ASEAN Secretary-General Dr. Kao Kim Hourn for the trilateral discussions.
Fidan is expected to underscore Türkiye’s support for effective multilateralism and reaffirm its commitment to regional cooperation. "The Asia-Pacific region lies at the heart of geopolitical, economic, and environmental challenges," he will say, according to the diplomatic sources.
He is also expected to highlight Türkiye's dedication to cooperation, inclusivity, and dialogue with regional countries under the Asia Anew Initiative.
Fidan will express Türkiye's readiness to contribute to joint efforts addressing natural disasters, transnational crime, development issues, trade supply chain disruptions, poverty and food security.
He will also present Türkiye's principled stance and diplomatic approach to resolving regional crises, including conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, according to the diplomatic sources.
The foreign minister will address Israel's aggression as a threat to regional and global peace and stability. He will emphasize that a two-state solution to the Palestinian issue remains essential for resolving Middle East problems.
Fidan is expected to meet with counterparts on the margins of the ASEAN meeting. The foreign minister will highlight how the failure of global mechanisms to produce solutions has made joint efforts more crucial than ever.
He will also discuss concrete contributions Türkiye can offer to support collective initiatives in the region.
Türkiye became a sectoral dialogue partner of ASEAN in 2017 after joining the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in 2010. The partnership's "Practical Cooperation Areas" document was updated in 2024 to cover the 2024-2028 period, expanding cooperation areas.
Trade volume between Türkiye and ASEAN countries has grown significantly, rising from $6.5 billion in 2010 to $12 billion in 2017 and reaching $15.7 billion in 2024. Türkiye submitted its official application for ASEAN Dialogue Partnership status in 2024.
Fidan last participated in a trilateral meeting on July 26, 2024, in Vientiane, Laos, during the 57th ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting.
