Türkiye's National Intelligence Organization, MIT, captured 10 Daesh members on Interpol Red Notices in a coordinated cross-border operation in Syria conducted jointly with the Syrian Intelligence Service.

Following their transfer to Türkiye, nine of the 10 were remanded in custody after questioning, while detention proceedings for the tenth were extended.

The security sources said intelligence work had identified Turkish nationals who had crossed into Syria to join Daesh, established their activities within the organization, and determined their involvement in multiple terrorist attacks previously carried out inside Türkiye.

Ten suspects: Profiles and roles

MIT identified the 10 suspects and detailed their alleged roles as follows.

  • Ali Bora is alleged to have joined Daesh in Syria in 2014 and served in multiple units, including the "Faruk Office," Daesh's so-called Türkiye Wilayat, and to have been among the planners of three separate attacks on Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) carried out by elements of the Türkiye Wilayat. MIT described him as Daesh's intelligence leader responsible for Türkiye.
  • Omer Deniz Dundar allegedly joined Daesh in Syria in 2014 and served in the Faruk Office. MIT determined he was connected to the perpetrators of the October 2015 Ankara train station bombing, which killed 109 people and wounded hundreds more. He was also linked to multiple other Daesh attacks targeting Türkiye. During 2017 counter-terrorism operations that prevented possible attacks inside Türkiye, authorities apprehended two suicide bombers wearing explosive vests; forensic fingerprint analysis of the bomb devices found Dundar's fingerprints.
  • Huseyin Peri joined Daesh in Syria in 2014 and worked in its medical unit. He was captured by PYD/YPG in 2015 and imprisoned before being released in a prisoner exchange between PYD/YPG and Daesh. After his release, he continued working in Daesh's medical unit until 2019.
  • Kadir Gozukara joined Daesh in Syria in 2015 at the direction of Mustafa Dokumaci, leader of the Daesh-affiliated DOKUMACI Group. Due to a disability, he did not participate in armed activities but provided logistical support for Daesh members arriving in Syria and carried out media activities at Dokumaci's direction until 2021.
  • Abdullah Cobanoglu crossed into Syria in 2016 to operate in conflict zones and participated in armed activities with Salafi-Takfiri groups. He lost a leg in an IED attack on his vehicle. In 2020, he pledged allegiance to Daesh and joined its media unit under the Faruk Office.
  • Hakki Yuksek joined Daesh in Syria in 2016, participated in armed combat operations and later continued activities within the organization's cell structure after Daesh lost territorial control. He served for a period within the Faruk Office and acted as assistant and personal aide to DOKUMACI Group leader Mustafa Dokumaci.
  • Kadir Demir crossed from Sanliurfa into Syria in 2016 and operated with Salafi-Takfiri groups in Idlib and surrounding areas before pledging allegiance to Daesh in 2017 and serving as the administrative responsible within the Faruk Office. MIT determined he was connected to operations carried out by the Faruk Office.
  • Cekdar Yilmaz joined Daesh in Syria in 2017, underwent military training and operated as an armed member in the Idlib region before joining Daesh's Faruk Battalion in 2018 and continuing in its media unit.
  • Murat Ozdemir crossed into Syria in 2017, participated in armed Daesh operations in Idlib and later continued activities within the Faruk Office after Daesh lost territory. He also reportedly operated against the Assad regime within Daesh.
  • Ishak Gunci joined Daesh in Syria in 2017, participated in armed combat and operations within the Faruk Office, including mortar attacks against the Assad regime, and continued his activities until his capture.
