Ibrahim Kalin, head of Türkiye's National Intelligence Organization (MIT), held high-level meetings in Baghdad on Monday, focusing on the "terror-free Türkiye" initiative, joint border security, and regional counterterrorism coordination.
According to information obtained from security sources, Kalin traveled to Baghdad on July 8 for bilateral contacts.
According to security sources, Kalin met separately with Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, and other senior officials to discuss steps aimed at eliminating terrorism from the region and removing it from the regional agenda.
The meetings focused on the "terror-free Türkiye" initiative as the primary agenda item. Iraqi authorities reiterated their full support for Türkiye at all levels.
Kalin first met with Prime Minister al-Sudani in Baghdad, followed by a meeting with President Rashid. Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein also participated in the meeting with President Rashid.
As part of his Baghdad contacts, MIT Chief Kalin also met with Iraqi Defense Minister Thabit Abbasi, Iraqi National Intelligence Service Chief Hamid al-Shatri, Iraqi Sovereignty Alliance Leader Khamis al-Khanjar, and Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani.
The most important agenda item in meetings with the Baghdad administration was the 'terror-free Türkiye" process.
Joint steps to be taken in the upcoming period were discussed with the Iraqi administration regarding mutual border security, clearing the region of terrorism, and removing terror from the regional agenda. The Iraqi administration emphasized its full support for Türkiye at every level.
In MIT chief Kalin's meetings with the Baghdad administration, cooperation opportunities for ensuring regional peace and stability were negotiated. Good relations between the two countries were also among the topics on the table.
The war between Iran and Israel was also on the agenda during the MIT chief's Baghdad visit. The cease-fire process between the two countries following the clashes was evaluated.
MIT chief Kalin also met with Iraqi Turkmen Front (ITC) chairman M. Seman Agaoglu and ITC executives, where he was briefed on the general security situation in Turkmen-populated areas of Iraq and preparations for elections.
