Prominent Turkish journalist and writer Nihat Genc has died at the age of 69 after a prolonged battle with lung cancer, local media reported on Friday.
Genc passed away on July 4 at Türkiye’s Gazi University Hospital in Ankara, where he had been receiving treatment and was recently placed in intensive care. His condition deteriorated over the past week, leading to his being intubated.
Born in 1956 in Trabzon’s Faroz district, Genc was known for his fierce independence, sharp rhetoric, and critical stance on both political and social issues in Türkiye. He began his career in public service after graduating from Hacettepe University and later entered journalism.
He gained wider recognition through television programs like Ne Var Ne Yok and Veryansin. In 2019, he founded the digital media outlet Veryansin TV after parting ways with Oda TV.
Throughout his career, Genc authored more than 40 books, including titles such as Kopeklesmenin Tarihi and Amerikan Kopekleri. He was known for his nationalistic, Kemalist, and left-leaning views, as well as his unapologetic commentary that often stirred both praise and controversy.
