Turkish State Railways (TCDD) has announced that unclaimed items left on trains will be sold through a public auction following the expiration of the statutory storage period.
The items, collected from high-speed trains (YHT), mainline and regional services, as well as urban rail systems including Marmaray, Baskentray and the Sirkeci–Kazlicesme line, are recovered by onboard staff during routine end-of-journey inspections. All recovered belongings are recorded in detail, including train and wagon information, seat numbers, item descriptions, and distinguishing features, before being transferred to lost property offices.
Under applicable regulations, non-perishable items are stored for one year. Food and other perishable goods are excluded due to spoilage risks. Items that remain unclaimed after the retention period are subsequently disposed of through a regulated auction process.
TCDD will conduct a three-day public auction on May 20–22 at the former Ankara Railway Station waiting hall. Items will be categorized and offered for sale under three main groups: electronics, mixed goods and clothing and textiles.
The list of items to be auctioned will be published on the organization’s official website on 13–15 May. In addition, all goods will be exhibited for public viewing prior to the auction.
Electronics include mobile phones, tablets, headphones and cameras, while the mixed category comprises umbrellas, books, watches and kitchenware. Clothing and textile items consist primarily of unused or clean garments.
According to official data, eyeglasses are the most frequently forgotten item on trains, with 1,066 recorded cases. Other commonly misplaced belongings include 783 headphone cases, 545 chargers, 294 headphones and 78 umbrellas. More unusual items such as drone equipment, food processors and glass cookware were also among the recovered goods.
