Turkish VP meets Syria's al-Sharaa to discuss economic cooperation and regional development

Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz held a comprehensive working meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and his accompanying delegation to discuss strengthening bilateral economic ties and supporting Syria's reconstruction efforts.

The meeting in Ankara included Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani, Syrian Defense Minister Morhaf Abu Kasra, and Turkish Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek, signaling the importance both countries place on expanding their economic relationship.

Yilmaz announced the meeting's outcomes through his social media account, emphasizing the multidimensional approach taken to address relations between the two countries.

Economic reforms, development initiatives take center stage

The Turkish vice president outlined the comprehensive discussions held during the working meeting, focusing on deepening economic cooperation in Syria's new era.

"In our meeting, we held comprehensive consultations on deepening our economic cooperation in the new period. We evaluated the steps to be taken together for financial and economic reforms and welfare increase in Syria," Yilmaz stated.

The discussions centered on practical measures to support Syria's economic transformation and development trajectory following recent political changes in the country.

Sanctions relief expected to unlock economic potential

Yilmaz expressed confidence in Syria's economic prospects, particularly anticipating the lifting of international sanctions that have constrained the country's development.

"We wholeheartedly believe that the historic transformation and political revolution experienced in Syria will be crowned with development breakthroughs," he said.

"In an environment where sanctions are lifted, we expect the activation of long-unused potential, increased public and private investments, and breakthroughs in the economy with high growth rates."

Regional stability through economic development

The Turkish official emphasized the broader regional implications of Syria's economic recovery, linking bilateral cooperation to wider Middle Eastern stability.

"A developing Syria will contribute greatly to regional prosperity and stability as well as our bilateral relations," Yilmaz noted, highlighting the interconnected nature of regional economic health.

Turkish support for Syrian reconstruction continues

Yilmaz thanked Syrian President Sharaa and his delegation for their constructive and sincere approach during the discussions, reaffirming Türkiye's commitment to supporting Syrian reconstruction efforts.

"I thank Mr. Ahmed Sharaa and his delegation for their constructive and sincere approaches. As Türkiye, we will continue to provide all kinds of support to the Syrian people in their process of peace, development, and reconstruction," he stated.

Senior officials participate in strategic discussions

The meeting also included key Turkish economic and defense officials, demonstrating the comprehensive nature of the cooperation framework being developed.

Presidential Defense Industry President Haluk Gorgun and Central Bank of Türkiye Governor Fatih Karahan were also present during the discussions, indicating the meeting's focus on both financial and strategic cooperation aspects.

The high-level participation from both sides reflects the importance placed on establishing robust institutional frameworks for ongoing cooperation between Türkiye and Syria.
