The Turkish Foreign Ministry commemorated the first anniversary of Syria's Freedom Day on Dec. 8, marking one year since the end of Bashar al-Assad's regime and Syria's internal war.
In an official written statement, the foreign ministry sincerely congratulated the Syrian people on their Freedom Day.
"On the first anniversary of Dec. 8, 2024, marking the end of the civil war in Syria and the fall of the Assad regime, we wholeheartedly congratulate the Syrian people as they celebrate their Liberation Day," the foreign ministry said.
The foreign ministry acknowledged the Syrian government's progress despite significant challenges over the past year.
"The Syrian Government, despite facing numerous challenges over 2024, has pursued a sensible and peaceful foreign policy and has taken lasting steps toward achieving the respectable position Syria deserves in the international arena," the statement said.
Türkiye emphasized its continued commitment to supporting Syria's stability and development.
"Türkiye will continue to strongly support efforts toward establishing stability, security and prosperity in Syria," the Foreign Ministry noted in the statement.
Dec. 8, 2024, marked a historic turning point for Syria, signifying the end of nearly 25 years of Bashar al-Assad's authoritarian rule and the cessation of the country's devastating internal conflict.
The date has been declared Syria's Freedom Day, commemorating the Syrian people's liberation from the Assad regime.
The collapse of the Assad regime on Dec. 8, 2024, represented a watershed moment in Syrian history, ending decades of civil war and political oppression that had devastated the nation's infrastructure, economy, and society.
Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa vowed on Monday that his country is entering a new phase of reconstruction "worthy of its present and its past," marking the first anniversary of the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime that ruled for nearly 25 years.
In a speech delivered after performing the dawn prayer at the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, Sharaa, wearing a military uniform, told Syrians: "No one, no matter how great, will stand in our way. No obstacle will stop us, and together we will face every challenge, Allah willing."
The Syrian president emphasized his vision for Syria's future. "From its north to its south, and from its east to its west, Allah willing, we will restore Syria strong again with a rebuilding worthy of its present and its past—a rebuilding worthy of Syria's ancient heritage," Sharaa said.
Sharaa outlined that the next phase of reconstruction will be grounded in principles of social welfare and justice.
"The next phase will be grounded in supporting the vulnerable and ensuring justice among people," he said.
