Türkiye has completed a security wall along 1,304 kilometers (810.27 miles) of its land borders, according to the 2026 Presidential Annual Program published in the Official Gazette.

The figure represents 44% of the country’s 2,949-kilometer land border network as of Oct. 14. Authorities also built 1,700 kilometers of patrol roads, covering 58% of the total border length.

The program details ongoing projects under the Physical Border Security Systems initiative, which began in 2016.

The government launched the program to strengthen border monitoring, prevent irregular migration, stop smuggling activities and block potential terrorist movements before they reach Türkiye’s territory.

Major construction progress on high-risk borders

The report states that Türkiye identified the Syria and Iran borders as the highest-risk areas. These two borders stretch a combined 1,471 kilometers.

Authorities built 1,274 kilometers of security wall along these areas, covering about 87% of the total length. Patrol road construction matched this level, reaching 1,275 kilometers.

Work also continued along the Iraq border, which plays a strategic role in efforts against irregular migration, smuggling and terrorism.

Security officials completed a physical barrier along 25 kilometers of the Iraq border and finished patrol roads along 26 kilometers. Construction continues on an additional 13 kilometers.

Border construction recorded across eastern Turkish provinces

Between 2017 and 2025, Türkiye completed large sections of the eastern border through work in Agri, Igdir, Hakkari and Van.

Authorities built 363 kilometers of security wall and 367 kilometers of patrol roads along the 560-kilometer Iranian border segment during this period. The program lists 81 kilometers completed in Agri, 54 kilometers in Igdir, 19 kilometers in Hakkari and 209 kilometers in Van.

In Van, construction remains in progress along a 92-kilometer stretch. As of October, workers completed an additional 26 kilometers of security wall in the area.

Surveillance technology expands across eastern, western borders

Türkiye has strengthened its border infrastructure with new surveillance towers and thermal imaging systems.

As of October, authorities activated 223 observation tower systems across eastern and southeastern regions. The electro-optical tower project also continued, providing long-range detection and identification capabilities. A total of 341 towers have been completed, including 250 across the eastern border.

Work is also underway along Türkiye’s borders with Greece and Bulgaria under the Thrace Border Physical Security Systems Project, launched in 2023. Officials completed 396 kilometers of patrol road construction as part of this effort.
