Türkiye on Wednesday denied claims that it is interfering in Somalia’s internal political processes or using its military presence to pressure the Somali opposition and support a specific political actor.

In a statement shared by Türkiye’s Directorate of Communications Center for Combating Disinformation (DMM), authorities said Ankara has for years maintained legitimate cooperation with Somalia’s Federal Government in accordance with international law to strengthen the country’s security, stability and institutional capacity.

'Manipulating public opinion'

“The claims shared on some social media accounts, aimed at manipulating public opinion, that ‘Türkiye is interfering in Somalia’s internal political processes and is using its military forces to put pressure on the Somali opposition and support a specific political actor,’ are entirely unfounded,” the statement said.

The DMM stressed that Turkish military personnel have “absolutely no involvement” in Somalia’s electoral processes or internal political dynamics.

“Türkiye supports the peaceful continuation of Somalia’s democratic process and fully respects both the sovereignty of the country and the will of the Somali people,” it added.

The statement also called on the public not to give credence to what it described as black propaganda and disinformation campaigns aimed at harming the longstanding ties between Türkiye and “the friendly and brotherly Somali people.”
