President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke by phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday at the request of Kyiv, discussing bilateral relations and key regional and global issues, according to the Turkish Communications Directorate.
During the call, Erdogan highlighted the progress made in ongoing direct talks between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul, describing it as "valuable," the directorate said on X.
Erdogan expressed hope that "meaningful results on the cease-fire" would be achieved during upcoming negotiation rounds, which are viewed as critical steps toward long-term peace.
President Erdogan also conveyed Türkiye's readiness to host a leaders-level summit to further support the peace process.
He noted that "the establishment of working groups in military, humanitarian, and political fields would pave the way for the summit."
Erdogan also reaffirmed Ankara's continued support for "Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity," emphasizing Türkiye's role as a key mediator in the conflict.
The two leaders discussed Türkiye-Ukraine bilateral relations alongside regional and global issues during their conversation, the directorate confirmed.
Türkiye has positioned itself as a mediator between Ukraine and Russia since the conflict began, hosting previous rounds of negotiations in Istanbul and maintaining diplomatic relations with both countries.
"Our conversations are always friendly and substantive, and we feel and greatly value the sincere and warm attitude of Türkiye and the entire Turkish people toward our nation. I thanked him for supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as for Türkiye's mediating role during meetings with the Russian side in Istanbul," Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a statement on social media platform X.
"We discussed the current diplomatic situation and the options it presents at this moment. President Erdogan stated clearly that any negotiations without Ukraine will not bring sustainable peace. We equally understand all the risks and threats," Zelenskyy stated.
"An imitated rather than genuine peace will not hold for long and will only encourage Russia to seize even more territory. I noted that we are ready for any format of meeting aimed at stopping the killings and ending the war," he noted.
"President Erdogan confirmed his country’s readiness to organize a summit of the leaders of Ukraine, the United States, Russia, and Türkiye. We also spoke about high-level events that Ukraine is preparing during the U.N. General Assembly. We are working together on Türkiye’s participation," the Ukrainian president concluded.
