As the 19th World Water Congress continues in Marrakech, Türkiye is completing preparations to host the next edition of the event in 2027.
The 2025 congress, taking place Dec. 1–5 under the theme “Water in a Changing World: Innovation and Adaptation,” is bringing together more than 1,500 experts and officials from over 100 countries.
Morocco’s Minister of Public Works and Water Nizar Baraka opened the forum by warning that drought, declining resources, and rising demand are deepening global water challenges and require stronger international cooperation.
The program features four high-level sessions, more than 140 technical panels, presentations on innovative solutions, and field visits.
The event is expected to conclude with the “Marrakech Declaration.”
Türkiye is represented in Marrakech by a large delegation led by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Ebubekir Gizligider, with officials from the State Hydraulic Works (DSI), the Türkiye Water Institute (SUEN), and the General Directorate of Water Management (SYGM).
Speaking to reporters, Gizligider noted that Türkiye is present in nearly all panels and technical sessions, saying: “We are sharing Türkiye’s water vision with the world. We are enhancing communication, experience-sharing, and cooperation among countries.”
He emphasized that the Mediterranean basin faces severe water stress, with water scarcity affecting migration, agricultural production, economic stability, and social risks.
Discussions at the congress have focused on technological infrastructure, human capital, innovation, and sustainability.
The Turkish delegation took an active role on the first day in roundtable discussions on the water–energy–food nexus and ministerial meetings.
Türkiye also inaugurated its national stand, while experts from DSI, SUEN, and SYGM presented the country’s experience on water efficiency campaigns, major water investments, nature-based solutions, and wastewater management.
Minister of Agriculture and Forestry İbrahim Yumakli is expected to travel to Marrakech on Dec. 4–5 to formally receive the host mandate for the 20th World Water Congress.
In a ministry statement, Yumakli said: “Türkiye strongly believes in contributing to solutions for global water challenges. Istanbul, the capital of water civilization, is a powerful hub for advancing the international water agenda. We are ready to host the 2027 World Water Congress with an organization worthy of Istanbul.”
According to ministry officials, Türkiye is continuing consultations in Marrakech regarding the 2027 organizational process, technical preparations, and the scope of the upcoming congress.
