Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned Israel's interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters as "a new act of piracy."

The ministry demanded Tel Aviv to immediately halt the operation and release all detained participants unconditionally, and called on the international community to take "a joint and resolute stance without delay" against Israel's actions.

The Foreign Ministry statement said, "We condemn the intervention against the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was formed to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, carried out by Israeli forces in international waters and constituting a new act of piracy. Citizens of approximately 40 countries are aboard the flotilla."

"Israel's attacks and policies of intimidation will in no way be able to prevent the international community's pursuit of justice and its solidarity with the Palestinian people," the statement noted.

The statement demanded that "Israel must immediately cease the intervention and unconditionally release the flotilla participants who have been detained." It confirmed that "the necessary initiatives are being taken regarding the safe return of our citizens aboard the flotilla to our country, and the process is being closely monitored in cooperation with other countries."

Ankara closed by calling on the international community to "take a joint and resolute stance without delay against Israel's lawless actions."

The Israeli army began attacking and intercepting the Gaza-bound Global Sumud humanitarian flotilla in international waters on Monday.

The flotilla, consisting of 54 boats, set sail on Thursday from the Turkish Mediterranean district of Marmaris in a renewed attempt to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza, which has been in place since the summer of 2007.
