NATO member countries agreed to increase their defense spending to 5% of gross domestic product (GDP) by 2035 and selected Türkiye to host the alliance's 2026 summit, according to a communique released following the conclusion of the NATO summit in The Hague, Netherlands.
The summit, held June 24-25 in the Dutch capital, brought together alliance leaders for discussions on defense cooperation and future commitments. The final communique outlined the outcomes of the two-day meeting.
The defense spending target represents a significant increase from the current NATO guideline of 2% of GDP, which many member states have struggled to meet. The new 5% commitment by 2035 signals an intensified focus on military preparedness amid evolving global security challenges.
"We will work to eliminate defense trade barriers among us and use our partnerships to promote defense industry cooperation," the communique stated, indicating efforts to streamline defense procurement and enhance industrial collaboration among allies.
