The number of couples who got married in Türkiye in 2025 was 552,237, while the number of couples who divorced was 193,793, according to marriage and divorce statistics published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat).
TurkStat data showed that the number of marriages fell from 569,983 in 2024 to 552,237 in 2025. The crude marriage rate, the number of marriages per 1,000 people, was 6.43 per thousand in 2025.
The number of divorces, meanwhile, rose from 188,963 in 2024 to 193,793 in 2025. The crude divorce rate, the number of divorces per 1,000 people, was 2.26 per thousand last year.
When the average age at first marriage is examined by year, the data shows an increase for both men and women. In 2025, the average age at first marriage was 28.5 for men and 26.0 for women. The average age difference between spouses at first marriage was 2.5 years.
In 2025, Gaziantep, a major province in southeastern Türkiye, recorded the country’s highest crude marriage rate at 7.76 per thousand, followed by Osmaniye in southern Türkiye at 7.68 per thousand and Şanlıurfa in southeastern Türkiye at 7.50 per thousand.
At the other end, the lowest crude marriage rate was recorded in Tunceli, an eastern province, at 4.18 per thousand. It was followed by Gümüşhane in northeastern Türkiye at 4.58 per thousand and Ardahan, also in northeastern Türkiye, at 4.67 per thousand.
TurkStat also examined the share of foreign nationals in marriages. In 2025, the number of foreign grooms was 5,347, accounting for 1.0% of all grooms, while the number of foreign brides was 28,646, accounting for 5.2% of all brides. Syrians ranked first among foreign brides and grooms
By nationality, Syrians ranked first among foreign grooms at 20.9%. They were followed by Germans at 18.8% and Afghans at 5.0%.
Among foreign brides, Syrians also ranked first at 13.8%, followed by Uzbeks at 13.7% and Moroccans at 9.6%.
In 2025, Izmir, a major coastal province in western Türkiye, recorded the highest crude divorce rate at 3.28 per thousand. It was followed by Antalya, a Mediterranean tourism hub in southern Türkiye, at 3.21 per thousand, and Denizli, an inland province in western Türkiye, at 3.14 per thousand.
The province with the lowest crude divorce rate was Hakkari, a mountainous province in southeastern Türkiye near the Iraqi and Iranian borders, at 0.51 per thousand. Hakkari was followed by Şırnak, another southeastern border province, at 0.52 per thousand, and Bitlis, an eastern province near Lake Van, at 0.63 per thousand.
TurkStat data also showed that 34% of divorces occurred within the first five years of marriage, while 20.3% occurred between the sixth and 10th years of marriage.
As a result of finalized divorce cases, custody of 191,371 children was granted to mothers. During this period, custody was awarded to mothers in 74.6% of cases and to fathers in 25.4% of cases.
