Türkiye’s first domestically-built warship, TCG Anadolu, departed from Gelibolu on Monday for the “Victory Voyage”, commemorating the 954th anniversary of the Battle of Malazgirt and Aug. 30 Victory Day.
The Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Youth and Sports jointly organized the event to inspire young people in the technology and defense industries while honoring Türkiye’s national struggle.
Around 350 young participants, including engineering students, university club representatives supported by UNIDES, media and communication students, and Teknofest competition winners, boarded the ship at Gelibolu Ferry Pier. Participants then transferred to TCG Anadolu offshore and commenced a voyage to Istanbul.
Youth and Sports Minister Osman Askin Bak welcomed the students aboard, emphasizing the significance of the event for Türkiye’s defense industry and national technology.
“Our country increased the domestic content rate of our defense projects from 20% to over 85%. TCG Anadolu is a major ship built entirely by Turkish engineers under the MİLGEM Project,” Bak said.
The voyage, planned for approximately eight hours, included onboard presentations by instructors from the National Defense University explaining the strategic importance of Türkiye’s maritime domain, known as the “Blue Homeland”.
Upon completion, TCG Anadolu will arrive in Istanbul and be greeted with an official ceremony at Sarayburnu Port.
Bak noted that the event allows students to observe Teknofest-related naval activities, visit the Teknofest Blue Homeland exhibition at Tuzla Shipyard, and witness the scale of Türkiye’s maritime and defense investments.
“We want our youth to experience national pride and understand the power of Türkiye’s technology and armed forces. Confident young people can achieve great things, and they will carry Türkiye further in the future,” Bak added.
The minister also expressed gratitude to Defense Minister Yasar Guler and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for facilitating the event.
