Participants of the international maritime initiative known as the Global Sumud Flotilla have begun gathering in Tunisia to break the Gaza blockade and deliver humanitarian aid.

Vessels that departed from Spain and Italy are expected to join boats from Tunisia before setting sail toward Gaza.

Delegation from Türkiye

Around 100 people are part of the flotilla, including members of the Türkiye delegation. Interpreter Aycin Kantoglu said the initiative follows previous attempts such as the Blue Marmara, Madleen and Handala ships.

“This time, nearly 1,000 activists from 44 countries are trying once again to break the blockade. As the Türkiye delegation, we are proud to be part of this initiative,” she said.

Historical significance

Kantoglu described the flotilla as unprecedented in scale.

“I believe this will be the first time in world history that nearly 1,000 activists have come together to form a flotilla at sea. It is an honor to be part of this in terms of civil activism. We are here to do our part to restore human dignity,” she said.

Security measures in place

Strict precautions have been taken to ensure the safety of activists and the flotilla, Kantoglu added. She did not disclose details about which Turkish delegates are involved, or from which port and at what time the flotilla will depart.
